They're my... reminder. When I see them, I see what they've sliced... Muscle, tendon, bone... even implants. Like a hot knife through butter.

 — Melissa to V about her Mantis Blades, Cyberpunk 2077

Melissa Rory is a NCPD lieutenant in the MaxTac division.[1]

Biography

Sometime before 2069, Melissa had herself implanted with the Higurashi 20-13 Mantis Blades, recognized to be of high quality, though with a certain flaw: they interfaced poorly with neural processors and a certain section of the prefrontal cortex. The Higurashi 20-13 line was discontinued in 2069 because of that flaw.[2]

On January 10 2077, Rory was likely driven into cyberpsychosis from her implants, and killed 14 people while seriously injuring 4 others. She was a rare case of MaxTac apprehending a cyberpsycho alive for reconditioning.

During the reconditioning, it was revealed that she suffers from relapses into antisocial behavior. Treatment with limited environmental stimulation and increased doses of neuroleptics was recommended by Dr. Taryn Doggett.[3]

Melissa kept her Higurashis as a reminder of her actions.[4]

Melissa met a mercenary by the name of V later in 2077, by which time she had already obtained the rank of lieutenant, and held a senior status in MaxTac. Rory's squad arrived at the Jinguji store in Downtown Night City just moments after a cyberpsycho had burst into the store, killing its two guards and attacking V.

After taking the survivors' statements — V and the owner of the shop, Zane Jagger — she commented to V if they had also felt the life of the psycho leaving his body. The merc asked instead if there wasn't a better way than just killing them, like taking them alive, to which Rory responded it only happened in extremely rare cases. V could also recognize her discontinued mantis blades, commenting that MaxTac preferred the Arasaka model instead. For Melissa though, those blades reminded her of the things she had done. Trying to rail back the aforementioned topic, Melissa asked V once again if they liked it when the cyberpsycho was killed, though the merc commented they were not as eager as her. After stating that she and V were not that different, Melissa tried to recruit them to MaxTac, V would either outright refuse or mention that they would think about it.[2]

Notes

  • Melissa Rory's likeness was based on Katarzyna Danysz-Żelewska, who also did the motion capture for the trailer.[6]
    • Likewise, the quest that Melissa appears in, Bullets, is a direct reference to the song of the same name by Archive, originally used in the aforementioned trailer.
  • As of Patch 2.0, it is possible to engage in combat with Melissa Rory and her MaxTac squad after finishing the quest Bullets by attacking them after leaving and reentering Jinguji. Despite her unique mantis blades model, she has a chance to drop the MaxTac Mantis Blades instead.

Bugs

  • Her NCPD Database information shows the name "Melisa" instead of "Melissa" (Version: 1.04, PC)
