Grace Steel is a character in the Cyberpunk universe.

Biography

Early life - 2040s

Grace Steel grew up in the Caribbean, where she gained her peculiar accent. She also used to be a military type before arriving to Night City, where she eventually joined the Back Bay Brawlers for some time. When the gang fell apart during a leadership struggle, Grace simply decided to walk away despite most peers thinking she could have taken the reigns. After leaving that life in the past, she spent her time working as a solo before pursing her true passion, music.[3][1][2]

By the 2040s, Grace had already founded her own band, The Soul Rebels, who played a particular chromatic metal style, being fast, shrilled and powerful; working their way through various back alley clubs.[3][2] During this time, Grace and other former members of the Back Alley Brawlers were known to hang out at the notorious Forlorn Hope bar, where she and her band occasionally performed.[4] By 2044, the Soul Rebels were quite popular in the bar. The owner, Marianne Freeman, described her as "a natural with axes — sharp and musical kind both." Although popular with the patrons, Grace never talked about her past, stating that it was a different time and a different person. During 2044, she was also the driver who helped Kissy and Roxxi save the life of Aurora O'Reilly.[1][2]

2045

In 2045, the Soul Rebels won a battle of the bands-style contest and secured a position as the in-house entertainment of the Forlorn Hope. That same night, a group of Bozos attacked the bar, though the patrons, including Grace, defended it.[4][3] At some point later that year, a fire destroyed the Hope. While this was happening, Grace was taking a smoke break outside of the building, and before she could realize, five patrons had exited the establishment while the rest were still trapped inside. While Grace was tending their wounds, a group of mercenaries that had been hired by Marianne returned, and Grace asked them to help those trapped inside. Although they were successful, not everyone made it out alive, including members of the Soul Rebels. When the Red Chrome Legion took the chance to attack the survivors, Grace helped the mercs defend her people and later carried those who couldn't walk to the From the Ashes clinic to treat their wounds.[1]

In the aftermath of these events, while the reconstruction of a new Forlorn Hope was being planned, Grace asked the group of mercenaries helping Marianne if they could also assist her in finding new people for her new band, as the former members had either died during the fire or simply left. The mercs agreed, and during the following weeks they managed to convinced Chevalier, Random, and Legacy. After an audition, Grace formed with them The Distortions, the new in-house band of the new Forlorn Hope. Soon afterwards, Grace moved into one of the two-bedroom apartments in the bar's building.

During the inauguration day of the Forlorn Hope, Grace could be told about Random's kidnapping, and after laughing it off, she was glad that Chev had Random's back, but was a bit disappointed he did not let her know about what had happened. However, in her eyes the band was still new, so they needed time to build up trust. With the opening night happening, the Distortions prepared for their performance. Grace Steel took the center stage, gripping the microphone with her cybernetic arm, and dedicating that night to the fellow bandmates that died during the fire of the old Forlorn Hope before jumping directly into the first song. Four mere minutes later, the Red Chrome Legion assaulted the bar. With Grace and the rest of the staff already on the known about the attack, she tossed the mic to Chevalier and jumped onto the crowd of Legionnaires with her bladed steel guitar.[1]

Notes
