Philippe Oreste, also known as Agwe, is a character in the Cyberpunk universe.

Biography

In 2062, a large tropical storm devastated what remained of Haiti, forcing its last residents to abandon the country in order to survive. Philippe Oreste, a captain of a ship, sailed through the waves, winds, and torrential rains of the storm to save 150 lives and guide them to safety atop pneumatic rafts. Over the following months, with their home lost, Philippe led the refugees in search of shelter and a new life, wandering around North America and eventually reaching Night City, where they were employed in the construction of a resort city in the Pacifica district.

Among the refugees was a gang of netrunners whom Philippe managed to organize to help the local Haitian community in Night City, including residents from other past diasporas. This gang would eventually gain the name of the Voodoo Boys among the city residents, since their real name was not revealed to outsiders. With how much Philippe had done for his people, the Haitians soon began to refer to him as "Agwe" in honor of the ancient loa deity of the same name, who was said to be the patron of sailors and captain of the ship Immamou that transported souls across the seas to Guinee. However, the Agwe of yore and other gods eventually faded from memory, for they couldn't look after the people as the nascent Voodoo Boys had come to do.[1][2][3]

By the 2070s, the Voodoo Boys local Net network was named "Rezo Agwe" or "Agwe's Network" after Philippe.[4]
