Wellsprings is one of the sub-districts of Heywood, located in central Night City.

Overview

During the 2070s, Heywood was considered a district of contrasts, and none exemplified this more than Wellsprings, a sub-district occupying Heywood's western neighborhoods.[1] This was a relatively safe area, at least on the sides bordering with City Center. Buildings in the northern parts of the sub-district were newer and modern, erected late in the rebuilding of Night City during the 2060s. These neighborhoods also provided reasonable safe housing for the small middle class of Night City, and were full of working stiffs and underpaid corporate employees. The waterfront (especially the middle and northern parts) was well-adapted for tourists, and boasted a broad variety of shops and other establishments, such as bougie boutiques and seafood restaurants. The Bulwark shopping mall was a popular destination for these reasons. Here there were tasteful apartments offering residents amazing views of Del Coronado Bay, while luxury yachts granted their lucky owners the chance for a more intimate embrace of the sea in the harbors. Due to the large variety of vessels navigating in these waters, this place was a fantastic observation spot for nautical nuts. Residents could also enjoy casual strolls in these low-pressure areas, as well in other secure and beautiful parts of the sub-district.[2][3][4]

Further to the south, the structures started to become smaller and older. Apartments here ranged from mid-tier to cheap, though Wellsprings managed to keep an overall aura of class. Most of the buildings here were built in the second phase of reconstruction during the 2040s and early 2050s, with old shabby buildings dating back to when Heywood was still called South Night City. This was a part of the city where the average citizen lived.[3][1]

Heading inland, the impressionist watercolors of coastal Heywood gave way to a gritter realism brand of beauty. In the eastern parts of Wellsprings, tourists could find service stations on every corner, and were also able to delight in some of the best Mexican cuisines Night City had to offer, including many taco carts. However, the far edges of the district also included shanty houses and similar businesses, evoking memories from the rebuilding period. The Valentinos presence in the eastern and southern parts of Wellsprings was obvious due to the many graffiti and members walking around. Although they were not much of a menace to the locals, as that group usually simply minded its own business. Rumors stated the Valentinos worked on their smuggling operations, but during the day you would never notice it.[2][3] Other gangs in the southern portions included the Animals and the lone, yet dangerous Scavenger cells. It was advised not to walk these streets during the night.[5]

WELLSPRINGS

They say Wellsprings is where you can find the average, middle class Night Citizen. They're not entirely wrong. Situated right next to City Center, the buildings are modern-looking, reminiscent of the city's overhaul after the 4th Corporate War. But the further southeast you go, the more the architecture becomes more diminished, older and often neglected. Homes aren't that expensive here - you can even score a 400-something square-foot apartment for a decent price. In other words, Wellsprings is pretty stable until you find yourself in the eastern part of the district, where the houses look like they're about to fall apart and distrusting faces leer at you from broken windows. Valentinos graffiti covers the walls, but as long as you don't get in their way, they couldn't give less of a shit about you. On the other hand, the scavengers to the south... well, let's just say if you've got any ounce of sense in that skull, you won't find yourself there after dark.[5]

Behind the Scenes

Wellsprings' coastal strip is the safest, densest and loudest part of Heywood. This can be thought of as Night City's Venice Beach, a place to be seen for celebrities and the chance to see them for nobodies, where you can dine on cheap scop hot dogs or ridiculously expensive organic seafood. It is chock-full of Kitsch: oversized mascots, over-the-top slogans, anything that will grab your attention. The architecture is laid back, not so much decaying as casual, with the washed-out vibe of a beach town. At the same time, plenty of wealth is on display, be it in the luxury yachts anchored off the promenade or the spacious condos in its high-rise apartment buildings. Head east and things transition fast. Suddenly, you're surrounded by Night City's rarest creature: the middle class. The apartment buildings are of moderate height and adequately nice. There are movie theaters, gas stations, drive-through espresso joints. If it weren't for the AVs and implants, you'd swear you're in a gentrifying early-twenty-first century American city. Keep going, though, and you'll remember where you really are. Wellsprings' east is as rife with unemployment, shanties and gang activity as any of Night City's other impoverished districts.[6]
