V is the playable protagonist of Cyberpunk 2077, a mercenary with a customizable background and character traits.

Character Overview

V, also known as Valerie or Vincent, is a mercenary involved in events during the year 2077. Players can customize V's character, including selecting a gender and choosing a Lifepath background, which can be Nomad, Streetkid, or Corpo. Each Lifepath begins in a different starting location around Night City and unlocks specific side quests based on the choice.

Background and Early Life

V grew up in the American wilderness as part of the Bakkers nomad family, making their first kill at the age of 16. V left their family after it merged with Snake Nation and made contact with Jackie Welles to smuggle Arasaka contraband. V was raised in Heywood, Night City, and later in a corpo family from Charter Hill.

Career and Major Events

V enlisted into the Arasaka Corporation, where they were trained in intelligence networks and became a high-ranking counterintelligence operative. After being stripped of their corporate status and deactivated implants, V stayed with Jackie for six months doing mercenary jobs. V was contacted by Dexter DeShawn for a job to steal a Relic from Yorinobu Arasaka, leading to a series of events that included retrieving a Flathead from the Maelstrom gang and a confrontation that resulted in Jackie's death.

The Relic and Its Consequences

After the events surrounding the Relic, V learned that it was overriding their consciousness with an engram of Johnny Silverhand. V faced a choice regarding their future, including accepting an offer from Arasaka that would lock their psyche in Mikoshi or refusing and returning to Night City.

Final Choices and Legacy

V's journey culminates in a series of choices that determine their fate, including the option to return to their body or to commit suicide. V's story reflects the harsh realities of life in Night City, where few leave the corporate world with their lives.
