Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. It is a member of the European Economic Community,[1] but is mostly controlled by corporations.

History

In 2002, in an alleged effort to decrease Spanish influence over the country, makes a deal to have Arasaka and Amazonian Service & Security replace its national police force. The European Economic Community, usually wary of corporate activity, allowed this as they saw Portugal as insignificant to Europe and its economy.

Leveraging this fact, AgriCorps successfully managed to make Portugal sell much of their land to them in 2008. By 2011, it was law that if a plot of land wasn’t producing enough equity, it had to be sold. Many small landowners were forced to sell to the AgriCorps because of it. In 2013, the Iberian Peninsula experienced a massive drought, forcing Portugal to sell itself completely to the corporations to prevent it from going bankrupt.

However, as of 2020 the corporate alliance controlling the company has split into two factions, each trying to elect their own president. The factions were primarily led by Arasaka and Amazonian Security respectively, and it was expected to evolve into a corporate war.[2] It’s unlikely this happened, given that Arasaka ended up involved in the Fourth Corporate War against Militech before tensions could escalate.

Government

Portugal is a country completely controlled by the corporations, and represents their idea for the world in miniature.

However, in the year 2020 a schism has occurred and the corporate alliance controlling the company has split into two groups. The first group consisted of Amazonian Service & Security, Iberian AgroIndustrial, and World News Service, while the second group consisted of Arasaka, Metropolitan Merchant Finance, and Oliveira-Leisure.[2]

Culture

Portugal is quiet and orderly, just how the corporations like it. Every adult citizen is assigned a job based on their specifications, and all they need to do to live their life is to work. Any rebels against this system are quickly taken away for "re-education".[2]
