Lol, yeah like ever hear of blu-ray? It's hard to believe that the video format that is standard now is solely owned by one company Sony, not to mention their was this huge battle between Sony and Toshiba for control in the market. When it comes to technology, media entertainment, cars, and stuff Japan is still really really huge. It even has one of the most powerful militaries in the world, though they don't have nukes so not as powerful when comparing that to Europe or the US, Rusdia, China that have nukes.

I agree its hard to see China as the 'new' cyberpunk big bad guy. A big part of China's economy is big through its population and the government always lies so it's likely not even accurate. Studies even showed from people who lived in China that the economy GDP is actually half of what they say it is. That's still pretty big, but not what they say it is. The thing about China is they manufacture stuff cheap compared to other places, which is why people take their business there. Also most tech from China is bad, anyone hear about Chinese cars in the US? No, didn't think so. I do feel bad because clearly the government tries to manipulate its people and the world, but hopefully that'll end soon after recent events. China could have easily prevented a pandemic and looked good, but nope they silenced experts and paid off the WHO.
