A sequel codenamed Orion is currently in early development.

Setting

Cyberpunk 2077 is a continuation of the events of Cyberpunk 2020, taking an alternate path to that of Cyberpunk V3.0. The game is set in the dystopian metropolis of Night City, located in the Free State of Northern California. Night City lies south of San Francisco around Morro Bay. During Cyberpunk 2020, Night City is said to have a population of more than five million inhabitants; this number is suspected to be considerably larger in 2077.

Following an economic collapse in the early 21st century, the United States is forced to rely on large corporations to survive. These corporations deal in areas such as weapons, robotics, cybernetics, pharmaceuticals, communications, and biotechnology; many operate above the law.

The game follows V — a hired gun on the rise in Night City, the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future. A robust character creator allows players to choose V’s gender, appearance, and background.

Plot

Prologue

The player character V, with Jackie Welles, is contracted by fixer Dexter Deshawn to steal the “chip of immortality” from the Arasaka Corporation. The duo secures the device, the plan fails, and Jackie appears to die. Betrayed and left in a landfill, V survives — likely due to the chip — and is haunted by the digital ghost of Johnny Silverhand.

The Corpo-Rat

V begins in Arasaka Tower, receives a covert assignment from Arthur Jenkins, lands illegally by AV at Lizzie's Bar, and meets Jackie. Arasaka security intervenes; V is cut loose, saved only by Jackie, and left with 10,000 eurodollars.

The Nomad

A lone nomad heads toward Night City, fixes a car in the badlands, deals with the local sheriff, contacts the clan from a radio mast, and meets Jackie to smuggle an Arasaka cryo-container across the border. A chase ensues; the cargo is an iguana from the Lesser Antilles.

The Streetkid

V runs a boost for Kirk Sawyer — a Rayfield Aerondight "Guinevere" owned by Kaoru Fujioka. NCPD led by Inspector Stints interrupts; Kaoru orders them killed. The pair is spared; V and Jackie team up.

Gameplay

Cyberpunk is an open-world, non-linear RPG with FPS combat. Players customize V and complete quests in multiple ways. Non-English speaking characters appear throughout Night City.

The game was pitched as single-player with multiplayer ideas. In early 2018 reports suggested multiplayer was scrapped,[1] while CDPR later said it was “in R&D” and not for launch.

World features include dynamic weather and a day/night cycle.

Perspective

Primarily first-person; third-person while driving vehicles.

Attributes

Main article: Cyberpunk 2077 Attributes

Five key attributes — Body, Cool, Intelligence, Reflexes, Technical Ability — rise via leveling and cyberware. Skills map to actions (e.g., hacking, crafting, weapon groups). Perks unlock via Street Credit and XP.

Exploration

Dialogue: Gold advances, blue reveals/side content; some timed. Scanning: Highlights interactables (enemies red; objects blue; job gold; hackables green). Vehicles: Enter/exit, drive, handbrake, horn, lights, switch camera; call active vehicle to nearest slot. Fast travel: Unlock and use Dataterms. Journal/Phone/Jobs: Track available/active/completed jobs. Movement: Crouch, sprint, jump, slide, vault; advanced implants: double/charged jump, hover, slam.

Development

The subtitle “2077” was added in late 2012; the team grew after The Witcher 3. In 2018 CDPR opened a Wrocław studio to assist.[2] Paweł Sasko cited Akira and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines as inspirations.

Marketing

CDPR partnered with Mike Pondsmith in 2012 and revealed the game in 2013. Big beats: E3 2018 gameplay, E3 2019 reveal of Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, and the Night City Wire series with the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. The game went gold on October 5, 2020.[3]
