Setting
Cyberpunk 2077 is a continuation of the events of Cyberpunk 2020, taking an alternate path to that of Cyberpunk V3.0. The game is set in the dystopian metropolis of Night City, located in the Free State of Northern California. Night City lies south of San Francisco around the area of Morro Bay, CA. During Cyberpunk 2020, Night City is said to have a population of more than five million inhabitants; this number is suspected to be considerably larger in 2077.
Following an economic collapse sometime during the early 21st century, the United States is forced to rely on large corporations to survive. These corporations deal in a wide range of areas, such as weapons, robotics, cybernetics, pharmaceuticals, communications, and biotechnology; many operate above the law.
The game follows the story of V — a hired gun on the rise in Night City, the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future. A robust character creator allows players to choose V’s gender, visual appearance, as well as historical background — all of which may influence the shape of the game.
The world is inspired by the works of authors such as William Gibson (Neuromancer) and Philip K. Dick (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), whose work heavily influenced creator Mike Pondsmith.
Plot
Prologue
The player character V, together with Jackie Welles, is contracted by fixer Dexter Deshawn to steal an important piece of technology from the Arasaka Corporation — the so-called “chip of immortality.” The duo infiltrates the megacorp and obtains the device, but the plan goes awry and Jackie appears to die. After meeting with Dexter, V is betrayed and left for dead in a landfill, survives — likely due in part to the chip — and becomes haunted by the digital ghost of iconic Rockerboy Johnny Silverhand.
The Corpo-Rat
V starts in the Arasaka Tower, where Arthur Jenkins gives them a job to take out another corporate employee. V arrives at Lizzie's Bar by AV and is accosted by several basketball players after an illegal landing on the court. Inside, V meets old friend Jackie Welles to discuss the plan. The target catches wind; Arasaka personnel arrive. V’s contract is terminated and they are nearly dragged away, but Jackie intervenes. V loses almost everything — except the 10,000 eurodollars from Jenkins.
The Nomad
V, a lone nomad heading toward Night City, suffers car trouble near the badlands and seeks a local mechanic. After repairs, the local sheriff confronts V. V climbs a radio mast to contact their clan, then meets Jackie on the outskirts to collect an Arasaka cryo-storage container to smuggle through the border. Arasaka is tipped off; agents pursue, and V uses a DR5 Nova during the ensuing car chase. The cargo turns out to be an iguana from the Lesser Antilles — a species thought extinct.
The Streetkid
V runs a job for Kirk Sawyer to steal a high-end Rayfield Aerondight "Guinevere" owned by Kaoru Fujioka. As V gets in, Jackie Welles holds them at gunpoint — he wants the car too. Before he can take it, the NCPD arrives, led by Jackie's childhood acquaintance Inspector Stints. Kaoru, an Arasaka employee, orders Stints to kill the pair, but they are ultimately spared. V and Jackie decide to team up.
Gameplay
Cyberpunk is an open-world, non-linear RPG with FPS combat. Players customize their character to suit their play style. Quests and objectives can be completed in multiple ways. Non-English-speaking characters appear throughout Night City.
The game was originally stated to be a single-player experience with multiplayer elements. In early 2018, reports suggested the multiplayer components had been scrapped,[1] though by June 2018 CD Projekt said multiplayer was “in R&D” and would not be included at launch.
The world features dynamic weather and a day/night cycle.
Perspective
The game is played primarily from a first-person perspective. A combat system supports guns, melee weapons, implants, and stimulants that grant bonuses (e.g., increased speed). Players may choose third-person while driving vehicles.
Attributes
- Main article: Cyberpunk 2077 Attributes
Player characters have attributes that can be raised via leveling and installing cyberware. Skills and perks can also be selected; skills correspond to actions (e.g., hacking, crafting, specific weapons), while perks unlock via Street Credit and XP. The five key attributes are Body, Cool, Intelligence, Reflexes, and Technical Ability.
During character creation, players select gender and customize their character; options include depictions of anatomy, voice selection with pitch adjustment, and more.[2] Backgrounds include Nomad, Streetkid, or Corporate, plus flavor choices (childhood hero, life events, motives for coming to Night City).

Development
Originally titled simply Cyberpunk, the 2077 subtitle was added in late 2012. The team grew substantially after The Witcher 3. In early 2018, CDPR opened a Wrocław studio to assist development.[3] Lead quest designer Paweł Sasko cited Akira and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines as key inspirations.
Marketing
In 2012 CD Projekt RED partnered with Mike Pondsmith and acquired the license for a video game set in the Cyberpunk pen & paper world. A teaser ran in early 2013; the world premiere gameplay drop happened at E3 2018. At E3 2019, Keanu Reeves was revealed as Johnny Silverhand. With 2020 conventions canceled, CDPR launched Night City Wire and revealed the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime and a Dark Horse comic. On October 5, 2020, the game went gold.[4]
