This article is about the location in Cyberpunk RED. For the other uses, see Combat Zone (disambiguation).

The Combat Zones of the Time of the Red were the most dangerous and lawless areas of Night City at that time — the only justice here was from the barrel of a gun.

Overview

Early history - 2030s

The original Combat Zone of Night City appeared in the late 1990s, and would slowly grow over the following years. Taking a portion of South Night City, this area was ruled over by gangs and was one of the worst places to be.[1]

During the late 2010s and early 2020s, however, Night City began to expand by reclaiming land to the southeast, filing a portion of San Morro Bay. This new area was intended to become a shining beacon of industrialism, but the Fourth Corporate War put a stop to those plans. Soon after the conflict, this unfinished and forsaken district turned into one of the worst combat zones the metropolis had ever seen, expanding and absorbing the neighboring areas, which included parts of South Night City.

After the war, many refuges from Central Night City overpopulated the nearby neighborhoods. Unfortunately, due to the chaos of the conflict, the gangs took over even larger swaths of territory, and soon enough the southern districts of central Night City were swallowed by disarray, soon being labeled as combat zones as well. In the following years, the Old Combat Zone had become the seed from which the rest of the combat zones grew from.[1][2]

2040s

By the 2040s, South Night City, Old Japantown, Little China, and the Old Combat Zone were absolutely infested and ruled by the worst gangs in Night City. Moving between the slums, tenements, and ruins of abandoned city blocks, these gangers and their allies divided up their territories, controlled the limited resources in the area, and killed anyone or anything that got in their way. During this timespan, there were no major reconstruction projects going on in the combat zone, although sometimes corporate forces or the NCPD dropped down on the area like a ton of ferrobrix and started killing the gangers wholesale, a process the city compared to trimming back kudzu. The City Managers designated to lead these neighborhoods had effectively no control over the gangs there. The worst of all was the Old Combat Zone, while South Night City and Little China tried to reconstruct even though they had almost no aid.[1]

Notes

  • Rex Royale was a fixer living on the edge of the Combat Zones that protected the border between these lawless areas and other safe parts of the city for a price.[1]
