The New Philippines is a country located in Southeast Asia consisting of 7,641 islands.

History

The old Philippines was in an era of conflict, with many of its islands being under the control of either the New People's Army or the Moro National Liberation Front. President Ramos was able to somewhat stabilise the situation, but when oil was found in the Spratlys during the Second Corporate War, Ramos allied with SovOil, causing Petrochem to attack the nation frequently.

After the war, Ramos was assassinated by a horde of ex-fisherman angered by the pollution the war caused. A man named Aguilar was elected, and in 2011 he wrote a new constitution and declared the country the New Phillipines. Elections resumed, but Ramos was quickly caught cheating and ousted, and the next president, Lopez, was blown up by rebels during his inauguration.

In 2013, SovOil finally stepped in to keep president Antonio Tiapon safe and successful drove the NPA and MNLF back. This also opened the door to the Far Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere, as they enjoy the country.[1]

Some time prior to 2077, the famous musician Kerry Eurodyne vacationed in the New Philippines for a while.[2]

Government

The Government of the New Philippines only really controls the main island of Luzon, and it's having trouble even just with the one island. The support of SovOil is the only thing keeping the current president alive, and their troops make up most of the presidential guard.

The North side of the island is home to the New People's Army (NPA), which is a Maoist group. The islands of Mindanao, Palawan, and the Sulu Islands are all controlled by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), a Muslim faction trying to oust the Catholics. SovOil has so far succeeded in keeping them to their established territories.[1]

Culture

Filipino culture is varied and intense, and it’s a good place to travel if you like chaos and disorder. For instance, in Manila alone prostitutes are readily available, Paltik makers can craft you a high-power pistol out of bridge girder bolts, and Aerodyne taxis are so over-decorated with mirrors and lights that they look like floating stars.[1]

By 2077, several food companies presumably of New Filipino origin operate in and around Night City, such as the restaurant chain Kabayan Foods, and the coffee brand Matapang Coffee.[2]
