Canada
Canada is a North American country in Cyberpunk.
History
Several NUSA agricorps have fields planted several miles inside Canada after the Bushfire that swept the Great Plains in 2000. Although they have no legal right to farm here, and no recourse if some Canadians come and try to harvest, the amount of land they get to use and abuse for free is remarkable. The Canadian populace is not happy about this and there has been border friction over it.[1]
In 2002, Canada was one of the countries affected by the Food Crash.[2]
By 2020 Canada has been growing unstable and it is expected to fragment soon with New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island looking like they will ally themselves with the Seaboard Cooperative of the US Northeastern States. Either looking to apply for statehood or secede from the Union. In Saint Lawrence Canada installed major locks and water recycling systems to keep the US pollution from contaminating Montreal and Maritime water, and had faced pushback from its Inuit population over politics. Within the less urbanised states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont a vocal minority has been looking for regional repartitioning, or secession to Canada. The Seaboard Cooperative was formed partly to prevent this. The SC in Vermont destroyed several miles of Interstate 91 but left it and Interstate 89 leading into Quebec operational, however they are now flanked with concrete bunkers and international shipping outposts. These prevent Canadian truckers from entering the Seaboard Cooperative as part of an isolation plan, but they still export SC goods to Canadian shippers. All other roads crossing into Canada under the SC’s jurisdiction have been ripped up to discourage smuggling.[3]
During the Time of the Red, the province of British Columbia was part of the Pacifica Confederation.[4]
In 2040, most of the Canadian cities had access to a Ziggurat CitiNet and Data Pool.[5]
Culture
Despite the massive damage done to the United States after the Collapse, Canada did surpisingly well, due to a small population and tons of resources. By 2020, Southern Canada had become an Agricultural haven because of the rise in global temputures. Due to the stabablity in the Canadian economy, major corporations had started to set up operations across Canada. Canada also employed an open corporate military force to keep the American Nomad population from moving over the border. There were expections to this rule however, but most of those families were smaller in numbers and were brought over with full cooperation with the same corporations protecting the borders to become employees. CHOOH2 has also become one of Canada's biggest exports in the agrocultural industry, while the luxury market centers around hardwood, as the current largest growing industry. However, even with the achievements brought in by the agricultural industry, the true Canadian economy holds all of the major corporations and products of the world. By this point, the National Government is mostly gone, now replaced by corporations, free to run the country however they see fit.[6]
