A corporate AV in 2077.

An Aerodyne or Aerodyne Vehicle, commonly abbreviated as AV (pronounced "Ay-Vee"), is a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft powered by ducted jet fans.

Overview

For sheer tactical versatility, there's not much that can beat an aerodyne. They can go anywhere that's above water, hover and perform all manner of vectored thrust maneuvers, they're faster than helicopters, and can carry more weight.

AVs were already in use by the early 1990s.[1] The first ever aerodyne was the AVX-2. McDonnell-Douglas was the leading AV manufacturer for many years.

Most closely resemble a flying automobile[1], the AV term has also been used to refer to crude contraptions such as a literal flying dumpster.
