The Northern Oilfields are a significant area located in the northern Badlands of Night City, characterized by their desolate landscape and oil extraction activities.
Geography and Description
The Northern Oilfields are situated in the northern Badlands of Night City, expanding over a large area devoid of any life. Some sections of the oilfields extend into Del Coronado Bay, and active oil drills can be observed from a distance. A portion of Highway 101 runs alongside the coastal area of the oilfields.
Historical Context
In the early 1990s, Petrochem acquired the oil drilling rights near Morro Bay and partnered with Richard Night to form the Coronado Partnership. Coronado City was established in 1994 and later renamed Night City in 1998. Petrochem constructed a refinery terminal in South Night City, while Prudhoe Pride Oil also had refinery facilities in the vicinity. However, the oil fields around Night City were not a major venture for Petrochem, which maintained a small office in Corporate Plaza. Night City's economy did not heavily depend on oil extraction.
Joint Ventures and Legacy
In the 2070s, the oil fields became a joint project between Petrochem and Night Corp. They are viewed as an irreparable scar on Night City, presenting a stark contrast to other districts and the City Center. The oil fields north of the city are considered a legacy of insider deals, with Richard Night choosing Coronado Bay for his project due to Petrochem's drilling rights.
Cultural Significance
The oil fields are described as pitch-black and smoke-filled, illuminated by flames from oil puddles at night. Johnny Silverhand's body was reportedly buried in the oil fields around 2023.
