The United States Armed Forces is the military organization responsible for the defense of the United States and its interests.
Government of Night City
The Government of Night City is headquartered at the Night City City Hall in the Glen. Night City is a democratic mayoralty with a corporate-controlled city council. Votes in mayoral elections are cast via a Data Term using IdentiCard registration software. The Night City Council consists of 100 members, usually backed by one of the top ten largest corporations. In 2045, Night City's government was in a technical state of emergency due to the Night City Holocaust of 2023. The office of mayor had been left vacant for years during this time. The City Council took the form of a junta representing various factions and corporations. The Council appointed City Managers to oversee basic services in the city's districts. Georgina Zembinsky acted as the district attorney of Night City in 2077, having succeeded Jefferson Peralez. The mayor of Night City is the city's highest governing representative, overseeing the treasurer's office and directing the heads of the city's departments. Night City did not have an appointed mayor after the AHQ Disaster of 2023 until 2070, when Lucius Rhyne was elected mayor and served until 2077. The Night City Council is the ruling body of Night City, with members elected by corporations. City Managers, who were nominally in charge of their correspondent area, were elected by the Night City Council and managed local sections of the Data Pool, handled zoning designations for corporations and neighborhoods, and managed road infrastructure taxes and police licensing.
Historical Context of NATO
NATO was a mutual defense pact between Western Europe and the United States against the Soviet Union during the Cold War. It ceased to exist circa 1992 after Europe defied the United States on several key policy issues. The Cold War ended with the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and the European Economic Community acted against the U.S. by sending aid to the Soviets. The Soviets accepted the Eurodollar over U.S. currency, leading to NATO's collapse as Western Europe made peace with the Soviets for the first time in forty years. The United States engaged in a 'Quiet War' due to fear of the EEC's power, and the Crash of '94 marked the beginning of The Collapse.
