Following an economic collapse sometime during the early 21st century, the United States is forced to rely on large corporations to survive. These corporations deal in a wide range of areas, such as weapons, robotics, cybernetics, pharmaceuticals, communications, and biotechnology; many operate above the law.

The game follows the story of V — a hired gun on the rise in Night City, the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future. A robust character creator allows players to choose V’s gender, visual appearance, as well as historical background — all of which may influence the shape of the game.

The player character V, together with Jackie Welles, is contracted by fixer Dexter Deshawn to steal an important piece of technology from the Arasaka Corporation — the so-called “chip of immortality. The duo infiltrates the megacorp and obtains the device, but the plan goes awry and Jackie appears to die. After meeting with Dexter, V is betrayed and left for dead in a landfill, survives — likely due in part to the chip — and becomes haunted by the digital ghost of iconic Rockerboy Johnny Silverhand.

V starts in the Arasaka Tower, where Arthur Jenkins gives them a job to take out another corporate employee. V arrives at Lizzie's Bar by AV and is accosted by several basketball players after an illegal landing on the court. Inside, V meets old friend Jackie Welles to discuss the plan. The target catches wind; Arasaka personnel arrive. V’s contract is terminated and they are nearly dragged away, but Jackie intervenes. V loses almost everything — except the 10,000 eurodollars from Jenkins.

V, a lone nomad heading toward Night City, suffers car trouble near the badlands and seeks a local mechanic. After repairs, the local sheriff confronts V. V climbs a radio mast to contact their clan, then meets Jackie on the outskirts to collect an Arasaka cryo-storage container to smuggle through the border. Arasaka is tipped off; agents pursue, and V uses a DR5 Nova during the ensuing car chase. The cargo turns out to be an iguana from the Lesser Antilles — a species thought extinct.

V runs a job for Kirk Sawyer to steal a high-end Rayfield Aerondight "Guinevere" owned by Kaoru Fujioka. As V gets in, Jackie Welles holds them at gunpoint — he wants the car too. Before he can take it, the NCPD arrives, led by Jackie's childhood acquaintance Inspector Stints. Kaoru, an Arasaka employee, orders Stints to kill the pair, but they are ultimately spared. V and Jackie decide to team up.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure role-playing video game, developed and published by CD Projekt RED that was released December 10, 2020. The game was announced during the 2012 CD Projekt Red Summer Conference as the official video game adaption of Mike Pondsmith’s pen-and-paper RPG Cyberpunk 2020. The expansion Phantom Liberty released September 26, 2023. The “Ultimate Edition”, bundling the base game and expansion, released December 5, 2023 alongside Patch 2.1.

A sequel codenamed Orion is currently in early development.

Setting

Cyberpunk 2077 is a continuation of the events of Cyberpunk 2020, taking an alternate path to that of Cyberpunk V3.0. The game is set in the dystopian metropolis of Night City, located in the Free State of Northern California. Night City lies south of San Francisco around Morro Bay. During Cyberpunk 2020, Night City is said to have a population of more than five million inhabitants; this number is suspected to be considerably larger in 2077.

Following an economic collapse in the early 21st century, the United States is forced to rely on large corporations to survive. These corporations deal in areas such as weapons, robotics, cybernetics, pharmaceuticals, communications, and biotechnology; many operate above the law.

The game follows V — a hired gun on the rise in Night City, the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future. A robust character creator allows players to choose V’s gender, appearance, and background.

Plot

Prologue

The player character V, with Jackie Welles, is contracted by fixer Dexter Deshawn to steal the “chip of immortality” from the Arasaka Corporation. The duo secures the device, the plan fails, and Jackie appears to die. Betrayed and left in a landfill, V survives — likely due to the chip — and is haunted by the digital ghost of Johnny Silverhand.

The Corpo-Rat

V begins in Arasaka Tower, receives a covert assignment from Arthur Jenkins, lands illegally by AV at Lizzie's Bar, and meets Jackie. Arasaka security intervenes; V is cut loose, saved only by Jackie, and left with 10,000 eurodollars.

The Nomad

A lone nomad heads toward Night City, fixes a car in the badlands, deals with the local sheriff, contacts the clan from a radio mast, and meets Jackie to smuggle an Arasaka cryo-container across the border. A chase ensues; the cargo is an iguana from the Lesser Antilles.

The Streetkid

V runs a boost for Kirk Sawyer — a Rayfield Aerondight "Guinevere" owned by Kaoru Fujioka. NCPD led by Inspector Stints interrupts; Kaoru orders them killed. The pair is spared; V and Jackie team up.

Gameplay

Cyberpunk is an open-world, non-linear RPG with FPS combat. Players customize V and complete quests in multiple ways. Non-English speaking characters appear throughout Night City.

The game was pitched as single-player with multiplayer ideas. In early 2018 reports suggested multiplayer was scrapped,[1] while CDPR later said it was “in R&D” and not for launch.

World features include dynamic weather and a day/night cycle.

Perspective

Primarily first-person; third-person while driving vehicles.
