In [[2011]], [[Militech]]'s experimental nanotech designed to clean up radiation grew out of control in Maralinga. No ready solutions were come up with for the potentially dangerous growth in the desert. In [[2013]], Angus Youngblood sold his farmland to [[Petrochem]] for [[CHOOH2]] production in exchange for a seat on the board of directors. The company proceeded to buy up more farmland in New South Wales. In [[2016]], riots occurred in Adelaide as drought and pollution destroyed their water supply. Arasaka was tasked with developing a desalination system.<ref name="2020PR"/>

In [[2068]], A major bushfire wiped out all but one of Australia's remaining wild koala population. The last surviving koala was found on Sydney's outskirts, and was appropriately named "Omega," meaning "last" or "the end" in the Greek alphabet. Authorities originally planned to euthanize Omega, but this was countermanded in response to citizen protests. Omega became a popular tourist draw, and was allowed to stay in the wild under careful supervision.<ref name="2077news">[[Cyberpunk 2077 News Broadcasts]]</ref>

In 2077, the koala named Omega died of natural causes, making species effectively extinct.<ref name="2077news"/>

Australia was once a very ethnically-diverse place, but the political unrest and food shortages in the 90s quickly sparked racial conflict. By [[2020]], these conflicts were thankfully rare, but there were still certain areas you shouldn’t go if you’re a certain race.<ref name="2020PR"/>
